Une dame de 67 ans est amenée dans la salle de réanimation de votre service d’urgence. Elle est en état de détresse aiguë et présente une tension artérielle de 211/120, une fréquence cardiaque de 130 battements par minute, une fréquence respiratoire de 31 respirations par minute et une saturation en oxygène de 88 % à l’air ambiant. Vous apprêtez à demander une radiographie pulmonaire portable, mais le personnel infirmier spécialisé en soins d’urgence prend l’appareil à ultrasons, place la sonde sur la poitrine du patient et, en moins d’une minute, déclare : « Je vois des lignes B et une faible contractilité cardiaque ; il y a un glissement pleural normal. »
